Indoor Air Pollution and some of the things we can do about it
Plants and flowers can make us healthier
You might decorate your home with plants and flowers, but did you realize that plants can
actually help your health? Studies show that plants reduce stress, improve mood and even
filter the air.
NASA scientists discovered that houseplants were able to remove toxins from the air.
Placing one six-inch plant in your house will help filter 100 square feet of air.
Texas A&M University researchers found that gallbladder surgery patients who gazed at
trees healed faster than patients with a brick wall view. Plant-gazing patients also took
less medication and had shorter hospital stays.
A Washington University study found that plants helped people handle physical discomfort
for longer periods of time. In a plant-decorated room, 49 percent of people were willing to
keep their hand in ice water for five minutes. But in rooms without plants, only 30 percent
of people could withstand the ice water for the full time.
When I lived in Florida, I had three hundred orchid plants plus other tropical plants and
I was always happy when I was tending my plants! Maybe it was because I was breathing clean air.
Rooms with plants tend to have fewer airborne
molds and bacteria than rooms without them.
Here is a list of the best plants for removing toxins from the air:
Mums
Gerbera daisies
Palms
Orchids
English ivy
Philodendron
Spider plants
Golden pothos
Dracena
Bamboo palm
Chinese evergreen
Peace Lily
Mother's-In-Law's Tongue
