The Continuing Story of Ann's Babies...

I'm not a glutton for punishment, really I'm not. But look what showed up in my yard.

It still has some baby peach fuzz on it and can't fly. I think it's from the Robin's nest that's in my grapevine. When I was looking for nests for the Robin's eggs that were abandoned by momma I came across it.

But the babies were hatched and getting feathered already so I couldn't put the eggs in with these babies cause they were so much further along then just eggs. I knew the eggs would end up being abandoned again once the babies in it left or the eggs w ould be crushed or pushed out of the nest by these babies weight and rapid growth.

Now this poor guy has been hopping around my yard all day without an adult Robin coming near it. I've been watching. It's chirping its little heart out with no luck. After 5 hours of listening to his chirps I finally went out looking for worms for it myself. I found a couple under some stones and bashed them against the stones and fed them to the baby. Am I sick or what LOL?! Lordy, he was straved and gobbled them right up. I continued to leave him out side only to continue to hear his pleading chirps. This went on for 4 more hours. Still no Robins would come to him. So out I go again for more worms, well after the second feeding he started hopping after me.. Still I left him out there with him chirping and hopping across my yard... And I got a lot of yard!!! Max screen to just see some of it!

He was in the backyard, he was in the side yard, front yard and even the gravel driveway. It was getting dark and he was still out there chirping his heart out with no results. Do I bring him in and give him shelter for the night? The weather report is calling for bad storms coming in tonight, I hate to think of him out in that with little or no shelter and I'd hate to see him fall prey to something out there being on the ground unable to fly. I know he'll be flying in a day or two if given the chance to start to fly. Yet.... I need a baby robin like I need a hole in the head.. My husband says I can't save the world. But can I just turn my back on this???

Another creature with no sense of fear...
Your wondering if I brought him in right?????

Update on baby robin

Some of you may already know about her, some of you may not. And for simplicity sake I will in the future refer to Watt as a she.

If your wondering about the name Watt. It's what I have called all baby robins that I have helped raise. It a throw back to the chirping sound they make.

But lets start at the beginning. The first couple of pics will be repeats for those of you who are aware of Watt already.

Three days ago I came across this in my yard.

For a tiny bird it has a very loud chirp to it. And I could even hear it's chirping from inside my house with the windows open.

I knew of a Robins nest in my grapevine and figured that this was one of the babies from it. I figured that the parents were around somewhere so doing the right thing I left it were it was. As the day wore on I continued to hear this baby robins chirping, It was hopping all over my yard and no adult robin was coming near it. It's pitiful chirps went on for hours and not once did I see it being fed by a parent. After 5 hours of this I couldn't stand to listen to it's pleading chirps so I went out, found some worms under some stones and fed them to the baby robin. It had no fear of me and gobbled the worms right down. It was soooo hungry the poor thing!

I left Watt where she was and came inside... It was quiet for a while, then the chirping began again and continued for another 4 hours with still no parent robin coming to it's aid or to feed it. It can't fly, all it was doing was hopping from my back yard, to my side yard, across the front yard to my gravel driveway. And I got a lot of yard!

It was chirping it's heart out for some help and wasn't getting any. Again I went out and fed it some more worms, left it in the yard and came inside once more. Now it was getting dark and the Watt was still out there on the ground chirping. So I was now faced with a dilemma. Do I just leave the baby robin outside for the night. Weather advisory was out for severe thunderstorms coming in around 10PM. Should I leave her out with little or no shelter to face the storm and unknown predators alone? Can I turn my back on this??

Or do I bring her in for the night? So I send out a Need Advise E to some of you and I want to say Thank you to all who responded so quickly. I also want to state that every one of you said. Bring that baby in!!! And that's what I did ... and now the story continues. Watt spend a peaceful, dry night wrapped inside Sweety's nitie and nesting in Sweety's water dish inside a box. The next day after the yard had dried out some from the rains the night before I took Watt outside, fed her and placed her under the grapevine. With her belly or craw full, she was quite content to just relax in the sun.

I hoped that her parents would see her and finally come to her aid. But once again as the day went on her chirps of hunger went unanswered. So off I went to dig worms! And can this baby eat!!!

And eat....

And Eat!!!

She is single handily depleting my property of worms and exhausting me in the process. Thunderstorms again yesterday with hail this time. so in came baby Watt robin again for the night...

Day three: When I took Watt out today it was late in the morning because of the wetness and a cold front has finally arrived here bringing our temps from the high 80's to the more normal 50's range at night. I tried to get her to fly a little by bouncing her in my hands close to the ground. She dropped like a boat anchor! I don't get it, she should be showing some flight ability by now, but then I'm not a robin flight expert. I decided to leave her in the yard while I got the spading fork to replenish my now depleted worm supply. I put her by the lilac bush and walked back to the patio, I turned to look at her and she wasn't there! I heard a chirp and looked down to see Watt staring up at me with a look that said Feed me! This bird is killing me here LOL. I had fed her twice already, and now she had raced me back to the patio for more. How can Robins take care of a brood of 3 or 4 babies, while my just taking care of one is running me ragged here. Maybe they can't, and that's why I now have Watt.

Who's now sleeping peacefully once again in his box while I type this, and still yet another thunderstorm rolls through

As you can see Watt is no longer a Robins robin. Watt is now.... Ann's Robin.
Anybody want to send me some worms??
Where is Ann?
Note:
Since Sweety left I have yet to see her again. I am a bit suprised by this because I really thought she would come back. But it's spring and she's young and there's male squirrels to meet. Wherever she is I hope she's having fun. :o) Sweety's Link
